How is your company working on Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG5)?

In 2015, the United Nations (UN) adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

They provide a recipe for accelerating peace and prosperity for people and the planet - now and in the future. The SDGs serve as call-to-actions for both developing and developed countries.

They recognise that poverty eradication must go hand in hand with strategies that promote health and education, reduce inequality and foster economic growth - all while tackling climate change and preserving nature.

At Inclusify, we are actively working on the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - with a particular focus on SDGs 5, 8 and 10. We want to help create a world where gender equality is valued; where everyone has the right and opportunity to decent jobs; and where there is less inequality.

SDG 5 - Gender Equality
SDG 8 - Decent Work and Working Conditions
SDG 10 - Reducing Inequality

What is sustainable development?

It can be difficult to answer how to measure sustainability and use the UN Sustainable Development Goals, or what it is that needs to be developed. Indeed, there is no single definition of development that fits all people and all countries. Some would argue that economic growth is the most important thing to achieve for development, while others would argue that money is just a tool for development.

There is no doubt that economics is a key condition for development. We live in a world characterised by both poverty and wealth.

I think we all agree that the 17 SDGs are easier to deal with on paper than when it comes to implementing them in our companies and organisations. SDG 5 - gender equality - is particularly difficult and confusing because it further differentiates between sectors, levels and individuals.

But we're happy to offer more ideas on how you could approach the task, but here are 6 general tips.

  1. Include your ambitions in your company's strategy - find your WHY
  2. Create a platform that makes sense for your situation -take the temperature of the working environment in relation to. D&I
  3. Speak up for diversity and inclusion as important for sustainability as climate footprint
  4. Have an attitude and stick to it - create a strategy for recruitment, retention and promotion
  5. Implement concrete measurable initiatives
  6. Create support and commitment in the company - offer workshops, presentations and courses
